Ciara, an elementary education major, is preparing for a career in special education while balancing full-time work and motherhood.

Ciara Davis transferred from another community college to CCBC in 2017, and she is currently pursuing a degree in elementary education with a focus on special education.

“CCBC was a great choice because it was close to home and financially accessible,” she said.

As someone who works full-time and is a mother, the flexibility and convenience of CCBC’s course offerings have been vital to her success.

“The online courses and weekend classes have been a game changer,” she said. “They allow me to earn my degree while providing for my family.”

Ciara’s passion for education and her commitment to working with children is the driving force behind her program of study.

“I chose elementary education because I want to enrich the lives of youth today,” she said. “I’m passionate about working with children and helping them learn and grow in a loving environment.”

As a preschool teacher already, Ciara is gaining hands-on experience in her chosen field while she continues her studies. Her goal is to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor's degree in teaching, after which she hopes to begin teaching in Baltimore County Public Schools.

The academic flexibility at CCBC has allowed Ciara to continue working while attending school full time. Currently enrolled in several online courses, she has developed valuable skills in time management.

“I’ve learned how to be more organized and accountable for getting my work done on time,” Ciara said.

Despite the challenges of balancing work, family and school, she remains focused on her long-term goal of becoming a teacher.

Ciara believes that it is important to be involved in campus life. She encourages other students to engage with CCBC’s resources and clubs, as it can lead to valuable networking opportunities and personal growth.

Getting involved opens the door to professional opportunities and helps build character.

Ciara offers practical advice for those unsure about their academic path: “Take general education courses until you figure out your program of study. And join a club to meet other students and explore different interests.”

As she works toward earning her associate degree and eventually transferring to her first choice, Towson University, Ciara recognizes the importance of completing her degree at CCBC.

“An associate degree can help me acquire a higher-paying job while I continue my education,” she said.

Ciara also values CCBC's support to its students, from academic advising to resources like food lockers, which have been crucial to her as a working mom. Her experience at the college has reinforced the importance of education in creating opportunities for both personal and professional growth. Through her hard work and dedication, she is on a clear path to fulfilling her dream of becoming an educator who makes a lasting impact on the lives of children.

Ciara is one of CCBC’s 2024-2025 Fresh Faces student representatives.
