Simbo Tadesse

CCBC Student, College Promise Scholarship recipient

Accounting major Simbo found support and direction at CCBC after feeling adrift at a four-year university.

Simbo took a class at CCBC in high school through CCBC’s Early College Access Program, offering her a glimpse of college life. After graduation, she enrolled at a university out of state but felt somewhat lost.

"I had trouble figuring out what career path I wanted to pivot to in life,” said Tadesse. Rather than continue to waste time and money at the more expensive institution far from home, she returned to her roots at CCBC Catonsville. The decision worked in her favor. “CCBC’s commitment to student success has blossomed my confidence in my future.

"Having the extra support, smaller class sizes and an affordable path forward has helped her find her footing. Simbo is now earning an associate degree in accounting tuition-free, thanks to the College Promise scholarship.

Who doesn't love a supportive, inclusive, affordable community?

"No debt, no problems,” said Simbo. Beyond not having to worry about how to pay for her education, she’s found a community of support that has pushed her further. “Being aware that the college believes in my potential has been a motivating factor to strive for academic excellence," she added.

Simbo has also enjoyed having a school that is close to home and offers much of what you might expect at a traditional university. At CCBC, she is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Business Club, the International Club and the African Student Union.

“There is a sense of fulfillment and purpose when involving yourself in extracurriculars,” said Simbo, who encourages others to take advantage of all that CCBC has to offer.

While some students seek out and enjoy a four-year college path far from home, Simbo has found her ideal college experience in her own backyard.

“CCBC is calling your name! Who doesn’t love a supportive, inclusive, affordable community?” asked Simbo. For her, attending CCBC has provided her with both community and clarity. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world."

Simbo is one of CCBC’s 2024-2025 Fresh Faces student representatives.
