In 1976, Al and Mary Lloyd tragically lost their daughter, Marie, in a hit-and-run accident. In her memory, they established the Marie Lloyd/Ed Lamon Scholarship using her life insurance money, aiming to help others pursue higher education. Since then, the Lloyd family has contributed over $1 million to CCBC through personal donations and events, funding scholarships, program expansions, and community initiatives, helping hundreds of students achieve their educational goals.
Al Lloyd is particularly proud of personally assisting students in immediate need. For instance, when he learned of a student who couldn’t return an expensive textbook, he made sure the student received a refund. The Lloyds also deeply valued the personal connection they made with students. One of the most memorable moments for Al was when a family friend received a scholarship, and he realized the profound difference it made in her life.
You can sometimes still catch Al at the North Point Flea Market, where he sells items to raise scholarship funds. Al has maintained relationships with many of the students he’s helped, staying updated on their successes.
Inspired by the care Mary received at Johns Hopkins, Al later established the Mary E. Lloyd Nursing Scholarship to support nurses struggling with student debt. CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis praised Al’s unwavering generosity, noting the profound impact he’s had on students’ lives. To honor the Lloyds’ commitment to education, the college recently dedicated The Alvin and Mary Lloyd College Center at CCBC Dundalk. Through his planned gifts and continued involvement, Al ensures his legacy of giving will benefit future generations, encouraging others to give back and make a difference.
