College Board – College Level Examination Program®
What is CLEP?
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to demonstrate that they have acquired college-level mastery of course content in 33 different subject areas. Students who successfully complete a CLEP exam can:
-
Enrich their degree programs with higher-level courses in the same discipline
-
Expand their horizons by taking a wider array of electives
-
Avoid the need to repeat material that they already know
For students who are able to pursue their degrees only on a part-time basis, or who are struggling to meet the rising cost of higher education, CLEP offers an educationally-sound, responsible way to shorten the path to completion. This benefit increases the likelihood that part-time or financially strapped students will continue working toward a degree.
The CCBC Testing Centers located at the Catonsville, Dundalk and Essex campuses are military-friendly test sites. Review the CLEP military link below to verify eligibility requirements for military personnel and civilian employees of the military.
www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/military.html
What subjects are offered for credit?
CLEP examinations measure knowledge of the material usually covered in various classes during the first two years of college. Some examinations may be used to meet general education or liberal arts requirements while others may be used for credit for specific college courses.
The 34 CLEP examination subjects fall within the following categories:
Composition and Literature; Science and Mathematics; Foreign Languages; History and Social Sciences; and Business
What are the Exams like?
The computer based CLEP exams are all 90 minutes long. If an essay is required for any of the Composition and Literature CLEP exams, additional time may be needed.
All CLEP exams are now administered on computer (CLEP CBT). The examination is preceded by a tutorial that explains how to take the exam on computer. This tutorial may be downloaded from the CLEP website at www.collegeboard.com/clep. CLEP CBT provides instant scores to test-takers, so you will know the day of the test how you performed. The only exception to instant score reports are CLEP tests involving a written essay.
These exams require college-level knowledge and critical thinking ability. Sufficient preparation is required to do well. For more information on the content and format of CLEP exams and to prepare for a CLEP exam, please visit the following link:
www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/prep.html
What is CCBC's CLEP policy?
At CCBC a student may earn up to 30 credits through CLEP. To take a CLEP test for CCBC credit, please refer to the CLEP Examination CCBC equivalency chart (below) for cut score and course equivalency details. CLEP and DSST credit will only be awarded and posted on a CCBC transcript for students who enroll in and attend CCBC credit courses.
CCBC's World Languages policy regarding CLEP Foreign Language Subject Exams:
Students who have not studied a world language in a U.S. high school may have developed competency in a language due to other life experiences. These students may take the CLEP to receive credit for prior knowledge. Native speakers of a language may also take the CLEP to receive credit for prior knowledge.

**College Composition Modular for CCBC Testing Candidates Only
The College Composition Modular contains a multiple-choice section that is supplemented with an essay section. CCBC testing candidates need to score at least a 50 on the computer-based section to earn credit for CCBC's ENGL 101. To earn credit for CCBC's ENGL 102, students must receive a score of 50+ and successfully write two essays graded by CCBC English faculty. The essay section, developed and provided by CLEP, requires candidates to respond to two essay prompts. Copies of the handwritten essays are sent to the designated CCBC English faculty member, along with the CLEP Optional Essay Scoring Guidelines, and a copy of the testing candidate's score report. Final determination of the award of credit will be based on the score and the graded essays. Because of the additional essay section, the CCBC fee for taking the CLEP test to earn credit for ENGL 102 is $35 (this fee is increasing to $45 2/1/13).
The College Composition Modular computer-based section contains approximately 90 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The two essays are to be handwritten in 70 minutes.

What does your CLEP score mean?
Review the following link at the CLEP website: www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/clep/CLEP_scores.pdf
Your score report shows the total scaled score for each exam you took. Total scaled scores fall between 20 and 80.
Comparing Scores
CLEP exams are developed and evaluated independently and are not linked to each other except by the Program's common purpose, format, and method of reporting results. For this reason, direct comparisons should not be made from one CLEP exam to another. Nor are CLEP scores comparable to SAT® scores or scores of other tests that use similar scales.

FEES
There are two fees: a CLEP fee and a CCBC fee
Read below for details.
|
|
CLEP FEES:
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test fee is $80 per test. This fee can be changed by CLEP without notice. Testing candidates may pay by credit card (CLEP's preferred method of payment) or check or money order on the day of the exam at the Testing Center. CLEP fees are not paid at CCBC's Bursar'soffices. If paying the CLEP fee by check or money order, do not combine fees for multiple tests even if they are to be taken on the same day. Make each check or money order payable to College-Level Examination Program. If the testing candidate is taking an exam with an optional essay, there is an additional fee payable to the Testing Center (see below for CCBC fees). The CLEP test fee is waived for eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees of the military. Visit the military link below to see the eligibility requirements for military testing candidates:
www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/military.html
|
|
CCBC FEES:
Currently, the CCBC Testing Center administration fee is $35 per exam. All testing candidates, including eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees of the military, are charged the CCBC fee. Payment for CCBC testing fees will be made at the Bursar's Office before taking exams at the Testing Centers. A form will be provided to the testing candidate from the Testing Center to take to the Bursar's Office for payment. The receipt received for paying will be provided to the testing candidate. Testing candidates must provide the receipt of payment to Testing Center staff at the appointment date/time in order to sit for the exam. The CCBC fee for testing may be paid by check, money order, payable to CCBC, credit card, or with cash. CCBC fees can be combined for multiple tests to be taken on the same day. If the testing candidate is taking an exam with optional essay, there is an additional fee of $10.00 for each optional essay payable to CCBC, making the total charge $45/exam with optional essay.
