What You Can Do
Talk to the student in private. Take your time. Offer your undivided attention.
Listen in an open, caring way, without judging. Avoid giving advice.
Help the student see there are options, including professional counseling services on campus.
Maintain the professional nature of your relationship with the student.
Refer the student for help. Emphasize that seeking assistance is a sign of strength.
Consult with a counselor about how best to intervene and make a referral.
Sessions conducted by clinical counselors are confidential in nature. The only exceptions are in circumstances which would result in clear danger to the individual or others, reports of child or elder neglect/abuse, or in a civil or criminal case where information is mandated by court law.
If the student is at risk and needs to be seen immediately,
accompany him to the counseling office on your campus.
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO LOCATE A COUNSELOR, CONTACT PUBLIC SAFETY: 443-840-1111.
