Hip Hop
Introduces the technique of Hip-Hop dance style; provides practice of Hip-Hop technique, from its inception to modern day, and explores the cultural influences of music, graffiti, text, and attire on this dance form. Two hours of studio per week.

Folk and Social Dance
Introduces the dance forms of different cultures; covers international and American folk dances, social forms, and ballroom.
NOTE: Credit may be earned for DANC 110 or PELF 110, but not for both.

DANC 111 – 3 Credits
Folk and Social Dance: Methods and Materials
Introduces dance forms of different cultures with emphasis on rhythmic analysis; provides opportunity to learn and teach folk and social dances, including ballroom. Three hours a week.
NOTE: Credit may be earned for DANC 111 or PEMJ 111, but not for both.

DANC 112 – 3 Credits
Body Movement: Observation, Analysis, and Exploration
Introduces a variety of methods for observation and analysis of movement; includes the process of perception, body organization, spatial investigation, anatomical principles, locomotor patterns, and the physical laws governing movement through experiential exploration and observation. NOTE: Same as PEMJ 112. Credit can be earned for one course only.

DANC 114 – 2 Credits
Beginning Ballet I
Introduces the technique and discipline of classical ballet; develops understanding and skill in basic vocabulary. NOTE: For students with no previous training. May be repeated up to a maximum of 2 credit hours.

DANC 115 – 2 Credits
Beginning Ballet II
Provides development and practice of the theory and technical training introduced in Beginning Ballet I; prepares students for study at the intermediate level. Entry level for students with previous training. This course may be repeated up to a maximum of 4 credit hours. Three hours of studio a week.

DANC 116 – 2 Credits
Intermediate Ballet I
Extends the classical ballet vocabulary and technical training with increasing demand upon sensitive performance of more complex combinations; course may be repeated up to a maximum of 4 credit hours. Three hours of studio a week.

DANC 117 – 2 Credits
Intermediate Ballet II
Provides intensified intermediate training with an emphasis on the confidence and skill required for the performance of classical Ballet; course may be repeated up to a maximum of 4 credit hours. Three hours of studio a week.

Advanced Ballet I
Provides practice of classical ballet at the advanced/professional level; emphasizes development of precise technique and expressive qualities in complex movement combinations.

DANC 119 – 2 Credits
Advanced Ballet II
Continues practice of classical ballet at the professional level; provides opportunity to perform challenging movement combinations that require technical precision and expressive range.

DANC 120 – 2 Credits
Beginning Modern Dance I

Modern Dance: Technique and Repertory
Refines technical skills in Modern Dance and deepens understanding of the body as an instrument of expression; includes dance technique practice, improvisation to develop creativity and rehearsal of movement phrases or dances from repertory leading to enhanced performance skills.

Beginning Tap Dance

Beginning Jazz Dance

Intermediate Jazz Dance

Dance Appreciation
Provides an introduction to the art of dance through social, cultural, and historical functions and explores the forms, styles, and aesthetic significance of dance in many cultures; dance performance attendance is required.
DANC 136 – 3 Credits
Introduction to Modern Dance
Introduces the art and practice of modern dance; includes technical practice, exploration of the elements of dance, the history of dance, and creative activities leading to the appreciation of dance performance and the development of a beginning technical vocabulary. This course is for students with no dance training or those who wish to develop beyond the beginning level.

Dance Composition I
Introduces creative process of spontaneous movement with emphasis on the development of an individual movement vocabulary and expanded facility for expression; may be repeated up to a maximum of 6 credit hours. Three hours of studio a week.

Dance Composition II
Discusses theory and application of the basic principles of dance composition with emphasis on invention and development of movement as it relates to the dance idea. May be repeated up to a maximum of six credit hours.

DANC 142 – 3 Credits
Music for Dance
Provides basic instruction for the dancer and accompanist in reading musical scores and accompanying movement patterns with various instruments; analyzes scores for their suitability for dance, provides consideration to communication of dance/musical phrasing, covers dynamics between dancer and accompanist, and provides opportunity for student composition.

DANC 146 – 3 Credits
Movement for the Actor
Provides theory and practice in movement to develop increased awareness of the body as an instrument of expression; includes techniques for improving physical awareness and coordination, breath control, concentration, and general body conditioning as the foundation of character development. NOTE: Same as THTR 146. Credit can be earned for one course only.

DANC 147 – 2 Credits
The Hip Hop Movement in Contemporary Popular Culture
Traces the evolution of American Hip Hop culture; studies the foundations laid during slavery, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights movement, through 1970-1990 as a predominantly African-American and Hispanic American art form, and into its current transformation as a multi-cultural phenomenon impacting music, dance, literature, and popular culture.

Provides practical training in performance, choreography, and the presentation of dance as it relates to the student dance companies. Dancers must be concurrently enrolled in a Ballet or Modern Dance Technique course. Registrants other than dancers must have consent of the Dance coordinator. A maximum of 10 credits may be counted toward graduation. Rehearsal hours vary.
