Barry Feld

Alumnus' gift to benefit budding entrepreneurs

Barry Feld, CEO and president of Cost Plus, Inc. and 1976 CCBC Essex (then Essex Community College) graduate, was so impressed by the concept of CCBC’s Enterprise Institute – an initiative designed to nurture and support the entrepreneurial drive – that he has pledged a significant financial gift to the CCBC Foundation. Feld, a longtime business executive and entrepreneur who first became a CEO at age 29, has earmarked his contribution to benefit talented business students who need financial assistance to pay for college.

According to Feld, his donation represents only a portion of the support that he plans to lend to CCBC’s efforts. Inspired by his experiences as a student at CCBC, Feld’s goal is to become involved in teaching, participating as a guest lecturer and developing a “scholarship for those in life situations where everything has unraveled.”

He intends to further strengthen an ongoing relationship with CCBC by developing employment opportunities and internships within Cost Plus, Inc., his California-based business with a distribution center in Norfolk, Va. and more than 270 stores in 34 states.

Avon Garrett, dean of CCBC’s School of Business, Social Sciences, Wellness and Education, is extremely appreciative of Feld’s gift and pledge of continued support. “Barry Feld’s generosity, for which he has identified the Enterprise Institute as a top priority, means a great deal to both the program and our students," he said.
