Discover the rich history of Baltimore's 19th century Mount Vernon that has been he home to scholars, students, struggling artists, newspapermen and women, social reformers, wealthy industrialists and society leaders from the early 19th century through the late 20th century. Observe its monuments, elegant brick and brownstone mansions and majestic cultural institutions then focus on the lives, legacy and former Mt. Vernon homes of prominent literary artists such as Carl Sandburg, Upton Sinclair, Edgar Allen Poe, Kurt Shapiro, John Murray, John Dos Passos, F. Scott Fitzgerald, HL Mencken, Tupac Shakur, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Henry James, Emily Post, and Gertrude Stein. Meet at Enoch Pratt Main Library by 9:50am. We will leave at 10am for the Walking Tour. Park at nearest off street or parking garage. Transit: Cathedral St. Lunch will follow at the Belvedere.

See how this unusual businesswoman, her husband and nine children were swept into action of the war of 1812; her friendship with Polly (wife of Francis Scott Key) and how Key created The Star Spangled Banner; the treasures saved by President Madison and his wife Dolley before the White House burned. “Flying Potato” The Martin X24A Lifting Body

Learn about the aircraft designed/manufactured by the Martin Company, Middle River, MD plant Including the B-26 bomber, 404 airliner, P6M flying boat and the wingless X-24A “Lifting Body” (nicknamed the “Flying Potato”). It was used as a research vehicle for advanced spacecraft and technical knowledge learned from it was later applied to the Space Shuttle. Lecture includes the technical goals and accomplishments of the project and experiences of the personnel working on the project. Lunch to follow at the Milton Inn. Instructor: Miles Miller
