Eastern Calligraphy and Ink-Painting
Learn to recognize the general categories of Chinese painting: plant, calligraphy, figure, landscape, etc. and appreciate the history and philosophy of these Asian arts from precursors' work. Appreciating and Collecting Contemporary Art
Explore the regional contemporary art scene and develop a better understanding of the dynamics of producing, showing and collecting artwork. Baltimore is home to a diverse community of artists and galleries and through classroom and off-campus visits, you will experience the people who create, present and collect art. Mix Media Drawing
Experience drawing inspired by the work of artists Kathy Kolwitz and William Kentridge. Still Life Drawing
Gain an overview of basic still life rendering techniques. Exercises involving spatial relationships, proportion, drawing textures, and compositional design are included. The last two classes present a cumulative experience involving a large-scale still life drawing incorporating multiple elements. Plein Air Landscape Painting in Oil
Paint landscapes in Baltimore County "en plein air," or in the open air. Discuss the history of plein air painting; plein air materials; effective composition; color mixing, relationships, and effects; balance and coherence; the limitations and opportunities of alla prima painting; the pursuit of a personal vision; and the presentation of your work. Foundations of Watercolor
Learn through a systematic process how to execute a detailed line drawing, transfer it to the watercolor paper, and practice flat washes with round and flat brushes. Through discussions, learn to demonstrate and experiment with creating tints and complementary colors. Intro to Mural Making: Community-Based Murals
Work collaboratively to create a panel mural to be donated to a local community organization. Design, plan and execute a medium scale panel mural by the end of this course. Laser Cut Codeable Objects - Lamps and Lanterns
Learn how to use the library to make a laser cut lamp using MIT's Codeable Objects Library. The library allows you to customize the size, shape and decorative patterns of the lamp. Topics include lamp shade design styles; basics of laser cutter operation; basics of the processing environment and how to assemble laser cut components into a single object.
