Introduction to Mental Health

Presents an historical review of the attitudes toward mental illness; reviews roles and functions of professionals working with individuals with emotional, behavioral, addictions, and/or social problems, studies various treatment procedures used in mental health/human services field, and investigates different facilities where treatment and services are available.

MNTH 102 ­ 4 Credits
Fieldwork in Mental Health/Substance Abuse

Assigns the student to a variety of Mental Health, Human Service, or Substance Abuse Treatment programs; allows the student work with clients under the supervision of either faculty or agency personnel to gain practical experience. Prerequisite: MNTH 101 or consent of program director

MNTH 103 ­ 3 Credits
Techniques of Counseling

Presents communications and counseling skills; covers helping people in crisis, theories of counseling, assessing client problems, mental status evaluation, assessment of suicide risk, problem solving and process of behavioral change. Prerequisite: MNTH 101

MNTH 109 ­ 3 Credits
Theories of Addictions

Examines major theories relating to the development of substance abuse disorders; emphasizes diagnostic criteria, intervention modalities, and treatment issues in the field of substance abuse.

Stress/Tension Management


Studies the nature of stress; examines the factors which may contribute to its manifestation, and determine which of these factors may be operating in students’ lives.

MNTH 201-202 ­ 5 Credits
Introduction to Mental Health

Assigns the student o a variety of mental health or human service facilities to gain practical experience with patients under supervision of agency personnel. Prerequisite: MNTH 101, MNTH 102, and MNTH 103

Introduction to Mental Health

Assigns the student to a variety of mental health or human service facilities to gain practical experience with patients under supervision of agency personnel. Prerequisite: MNTH 101, MNTH 102, MNTH 103 and MNTH 201

MNTH 204 ­ 3 Credits
Pharmacology and Effects of Psychoactive Substances, Drugs, and Alcohol

Examines pharmacology and effects of psychoactive substances, drugs, and alcohol; covers pharmacological, physiological, and psychological aspects of psychoactive substance use. Prerequisite: MNTH 109 or consent of Mental Health program director

MNTH 205 ­ 3 Credits
Techniques of Group Counseling

Examines the techniques and applications of group counseling and training for use with various populations; introduces various skills for effective group counseling in the context of group counseling theories. Prerequisite: MNTH 101, MNTH 103 or consent of the Mental Health program director

MNTH 207 ­ 3 Credits
Family Dynamics: Theories and Intervention

Examines the dynamics that contribute to healthy family functioning; examines the role of culture and gender; explores family dysfunction as it relates to substance abuse, domestic violence, and sexual abuse and major theoretical models of family therapy. Prerequisite: MNTH 101, MNTH 103, MNTH 205 or permission of Mental Health program director

MNTH 220 - 2 Credits
Crisis Intervention

Introduces concepts associated with people in crisis; explores approaches to help those experiencing crisis Prerequisite: MNTH 103

MNTH/HLTH 221 - 3 Credits
Human Sexuality


Explores the nature of sexuality, love and relationships; uses physiological, psychological, sociological, economic, legal, and health and wellness perspectives; historical and contemporary cultural perspectives; and individually oriented discussion.
