2010 CCBC College Catalog

Earth Science

ERSC 101 – 4 Credits
Earth Science

Provides a survey of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. Students must register for a section of ERSC 101 and ERSC 999. 3 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week.

Prerequisites: ENGL 052 or ESOL 052; RDNG 052 or ESOL 054; and MATH 082 or MATH 013; Corequisite: ERSC 999

ERSC 121 – 3 Credits
Physical Geology

Provides an overview of how the Earth works, including its composition, structure, and surface features and dynamic processes; includes minerals and rocks, volcanoes, weathering and erosion, running water and ground water, deserts, shorelines, faulting and earthquakes, mountain building and plate tectonics.

Prerequisites: ENGL 052 or ESOL 052; RDNG 052 or ESOL 054; and MATH 082

ERSC 122 – 1 Credit
Physical Geology Laboratory

Presents the methods and tools used by geologists to study the Earth; introduces minerals and rocks and interpretation of topographic and geologic maps. Field trips may supplement the laboratory experience.

Prerequisite: ERSC 121 (concurrent or previous) Lab fee: $30.00

ERSC 131 – 4 Credits
Meteorology

Discusses weather and climate with emphasis on the physical principles underlying the movement and processes occurring in the Earth's atmosphere; explores radiation and atmospheric heating, global circulation, weather systems fronts and air masses, cloud physics, local weather, and other topics in applied and aviation meteorology.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and MATH 082 Lab fee: $20.00

ERSC 141 – 3 Credits
Introduction to Oceanography

Introduces students to the physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of the oceans and to the methods and techniques of research; explores dynamic processes shaping and affecting the Earth and its oceans with respect to marine populations. NOTE: Same as GEOG 141. Credit can be earned for one course only.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and MATH 082 or MATH 013

ERSC 142 – 1 Credit
Oceanography Laboratory

Provides experience in working with oceanographic data and techniques; includes determination of chemical and physical properties of seawater, investigations of biological communities, and examination of coastal and shoreline features. NOTE: Same as GEOG 142. Credit can be earned for one course only.

Prerequisite: ERSC 141 (concurrent or previous) Lab fee: $30.00

ERSC 999 – 0 Credits, 0 Billable Hours
Earth Science Lab

Introduces basic procedures of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.

Corequisite: ERSC 101 Lab fee: $30.00
