Cardinals drop exciting OT contest to Chesapeake College on Sophomore Night
2/8/2012
On Sophomore night, the Cardinals really came to play. Each Sophomore finished in double digits in scoring. Melvin Barfield led the Cardinals in scoring with 26 points. Often and early, Barfield was dialed in from 3 point range. He made 5 3’s for the night. Lawrence Weldon added 16 points to the scoring total. Tyrone Smothers chipped in with 14 points and Kevin Jackson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshmen Willie Kee was the 5th Cardinal to score in double figures with 14 points.
Weldon led the Cardinals in assists with 8 dimes. Smothers collected 7 assists for the game as well.
Leading by 8 points with 1:50 remaining in regulation, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on free throw opportunities and fell to the visiting Skipjacks in overtime, 102-89. Despite the loss, it was a good night for the Sophomores and for their families/friends in attendance.
The Cardinals finished the regular season with an 8-18 mark. They begin conference tournament play on the 14th with a 7 PM contest at College of Southern Maryland.
Cardinals break 3 game losing skid with 78-74 victory at Harford
12/7/11
The Cardinals snapped a three game losing streak with a hard fought win over Harford Community College, 78-74. Playing well with one another on both ends of the floor, the Cardinals jumped to a 43-29 half-time lead. Despite a sluggish second half and a fierce comeback by the Owls, the Cardinals finished the game in strong fashion and were able to hold off the Owls for a hard fought conference road win.
The Cardinals had four players score in double figures, led by Tyrone Smothers with 26 points. Playing his best all around game of the season, Lawrence Weldon chipped in with 13 points. Kevin Jackson added 12 points and Xavien Ready added 11 points to the scoring total.
Smothers led the Cardinals in rebounds and assists as well with 5 boards and 3 assists.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, December 16th when they face Jamestown Community College in the Ben Williams Classic. The Cardinals will play three games in three days in the Ben Williams Classic held at Baltimore City Community College.
Montgomery Rockville defeats Cardinals 73-65
12/02/11
Playing their second conference home game, the Cardinals faced the Knights from Montgomery County Rockville Campus. Unfortunately, poor field goal shooting (37%), free-throw shooting (43%) and far too many turnovers (23) was a recipe for disaster against the talented and well coached Rockville Knights. The Cardinals fell by a final score of 73-65.
Kevin Jackson led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points. Additionally, by collecting 10 boards, Jackson recorded his first double-double of the season. Dominique Fitts and Willie Kee chipped in with 13 points each.
Tyrone Smothers led the Cardinals in rebounding with 11 boards. TJ Prioleau led the Cardinals in assist with 6 dimes.
Cardinals stumble in closing minutes, fall to CCBC Essex in overtime

Facing cross town rival, CCBC-Essex, the Cardinals got off to a good start, but had trouble finishing off the Knights. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, poor free-throw shooting, especially at the end of regulation (14-31, 45%) and some missed shots did the Cardinals in. The Cardinals suffered their second consecutive conference loss of the season in overtime to the Knights, 69-64. Kevin Jackson led the Cardinals in scoring with 22 points. Dominique Fitts and Xavien Ready added 15 points each to the scoring total.
EJ Stanley and Willie Kee led the Cardinals in rebounding with 6 boards each. Fitts and Ready collected 5 boards apiece as well. TJ Prioleau led the Cardinals in assist with 6 dimes.
Cardinals fall to College of Southern Maryland 85-82
11/22/2011
Enduring there first conference road game, the Cardinals traveled to conference foe College of Southern Maryland. Unfortunately, the Cardinals got off to a slow start, and trailed for most of the first half. Behind some solid team defense and a sharing of the basketball, the Cardinals were able to fight and claw to a one point half-time deficit, 49-48.
Early in the second half, the Cardinals got off to a much better start. Within the first five minutes of the half, the Cardinals had claimed a 56-50 lead. Unfortunately, some poor offensive decisions by the Cardinals and some clutch shooting by CSM , allowed CSM to climb back into the game. The second half remained a back and forth contest. With 4:30 remaining in the game, the Cardinals led CSM by 3 points, 74-71. Despite this lead, the Cardinals could not hold on. Unable to make shots down the stretch and committing untimely turnovers, the Cardinals suffered a 85-82 loss.
Led by Willie Kee in scoring, 18 points, the Cardinals had 5 players score in double figures. Kevin Jackson and Tyrone Smothers added 14 points to the scoring total. TJ Priloeau added 12 points to the scoring total. Dominique Fitts added 10 points.
Smothers led the Cardinals in rebounding with 8 boards. Priloeau chipped in with 7 boards. Jackson and Key added 5 boards each to the rebounding total.
Fitts, Priloeau and Smothers had 3 assists each. Smothers also collected 5 steals for the game.
The Cardinals return to action on 11/29/11 against cross town rival CCBC-Essex.
Cardinals open Maryland JUCO Conference play with 74-69 win over nationally ranked Baltimore City
11/17/11
The Cardinals returned to action with their first conference home game. The Cardinals hosted the nationally ranked Panthers from Baltimore City Community College. Getting off to a solid start, the Cardinals were led in the first half by some clutch shooting from Willie Kee and Tyrone Smothers. Additionally, EJ Stanley and Kevin Jackson were solid on the defensive end and in the rebounding category. As a result, the Cardinals raced out to a 42-25 half-time lead.
The Cradinals opened the second half with a three by Tyrone Smothers to take their largest lead pf the game at 45-25, but Baltimore immediately turned up the pressure defensively and went on a 14-0 run over 6 minutes to cut the Cardinals lead to 45-39. The Cardinals however recovered with a 8-0 run of their own including triples from Tyrone Smothers and Che'von Giles. Fortunately, freshmen Dominique Fitts and Che'von Giles joined the efforts of Kee and Smothers and the Cardinals pulled out a 74-69 victory.
Again, Kee led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points. Smothers added 16 points and Giles added 12 points to the scoring total. Fitts chipped in with 9 points. Kee also led the Cardinals in assists with 4. Jackson led the Cardinals in rebounding with 9 boards. Stanley chipped in with 6 boards as well.
The Cardinals return to action with a road game on November 22nd at College of Southern Maryland.
Cardinals fall to host Rockingham on day 2 of Rockingham Classic
11/12/11
Off to a slow start, the Cardinals trailed the entire contest against the Rockingham Eagles. Surrendering 94 points to the Eagles, the most points allowed by the Cardinals this season, was too much for the Cardinals to overcome. The Cardinals suffered their second consecutive lost 94-83.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Che'von Giles. Giles collected 23 points for the game and also connected on 7 three-pointers. Willie Kee handed in another solid effort in scoring 20 points in the game and doing a solid defensive job on the Eagle guards. Kevin Jackson added to the scoring total with 13 points.
Jackson led the Cardinals in rebounding with 6 boards.
Cardinals drop game to Guilford Tech at Rockingham Classic
11/11/11
In a contest delayed by traffic, the Cardinals seemed to dig themselves in and out of holes all night long. Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not get out of an early second half deficit and lost to Guilford Tech, 83-73. In a one point game late in the first half, the Cardinals were outscored 9 to 1 to end the half. As a result, the Cardinals were down at the half 41-32. After battling back to a three point deficit, again the Cardinals were outscored down the stretch. Poor shooting from the field and free-throw line seemed to do the Cardinals in.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Willie Kee with 16 points. Dominique Fitts chipped in with 13 points, and Kevin Jackson added 11 points. Jackson also led the Cardinals in rebounding with 8 boards. Tyrone Smothers led the Cardinals in assists with 5.
Cardinals defeat Northern Virginia Community College on Day 2 on CCBC Catonsville Mixer
November 5, 2011
The Cardinals returned to action Saturday afternoon against Northern Virginia Community College. A stronger defensive effort and some good shooting, led the Cardinals to their first win of the season. The defensive effort was lead by Eston (EJ) Stanley. Stanley collected 5 rebounds and also blocked 6 shots. In addition to his defensive effort, Stanley also added 8 points to the scoring total.
Che'von Giles led the Cardinals in scoring with 19 points. Giles who made 5 three-pointers for the game, got started early and was able to sustain his good shooting for the entire contest. Mikail Hernandez and Kevin Jackson added 10 points each to the scoring totals.
Giles, Hernandez, and Tyrone Smothers added 5 rebounds each to the boards total.
TJ Prioleau led the Cardinals in assist with 5 dimes.
The Cardinals return to action with a trip to Rockingham, North Carolina on November 11th and 12th.
Cardinals fall to Niagara CCC in CCBC Catonsville Mixer opener
11/4/22
Playing in their first home game of the season, the Cardinals faced a scrappy and fundamentally sound team from Niagara County Community College. Though the Cardinals were able to establish a ten point lead in the first half, untimely turnovers and poor defense quickly depleted the Cardinals lead. The Cardinals held a 34-32 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, the Cardinals found themselves prone to more turnovers and in a 52-40 deficit. Behind some great defense, and timely shooting, the Cardinals fought back to make a run at the visitors from Niagara. Unfortunately, Niagara made some key free-throws in shooting 18 for 20 from the line in the second half. The Cardinals suffered their second consecutive loss of this young season, 77-70.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Kevin Jackson with 14 points. Willie Key and Xavien Ready chipped in with 12 points each. TJ Prioleau added 11 points to the scoring total. Tyrone Smothers led the Cardinals in assist with four. Key led the Cardinals in rebounding with 6 boards. Jackson, Ready and Dominique Fitts added 4 boards each to the rebound total.
Chesapeake defeats Cardinals in 2011-12 season opener
11/2/11
The Cardinals began the season on the road at Chesapeake. Getting off to a good start, the Cardinals controlled most of the first half behind some hot shooting from Mikail Hernandez, Kevin Jackson and Tyrone Smothers. On the defensive end, the Cardinals were able to hold the Skipjacks to 31 first half points. As a result, the Cardinals raced to a 46 -31 half-time lead.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the execution and concentration did not match the first-half performance. Though the Cardinals fought back with a stingy defense, the Cardinals allowed the Skipjacks to post 54 points in the second half. The Cardinals suffered a 85-81 loss in the first contest of the year.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Kevin Jackson and Tyrone Smothers with 16 and 15 points. Lawrence Weldon chipped in with 9 points as well. Hernandez, Che'von Giles and Easton Stanley added 8 points each to the scoring total as well. Lawrence Weldon led the Cardinals in assist with 8 dimes. Smothers led the Cardinals in rebounding with 7 boards. Dominique Fitts and Hernandez added 5 boards each to the rebounding totals.
