THREE-DAY, TWO-NIGHT TRIP
Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow, NY - Kykuit, Union Church, Lyndhurst Castle, Sunnyside, Boscobel
Sunday - Tuesday, June 9 - 11, 2013
This tour has something for everyone! Upon arrival we'll visit Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate. Kykuit is a preeminent Hudson Valley landmark. For architecture, remarkable gardens, art, history, and spectacular scenery, Kykuit is simply amazing. This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family beginning with the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil.
We'll grab a bite to eat at the café (on your own) before we depart to Union Church of Pocantico Hills - a living Rockefeller legacy. Who would ever guess that this unassuming country church contains a stained glass window by Henri Matisse and nine windows by Marc Chagall?
We'll then check into The DoubleTree Hotel Tarrytown for a brief rest before our group dinner at the hotel.
On Monday our first stop is Washington Irving's Sunnyside. A gently curved path leads to gorgeous views of the Hudson River and reveals the allure of Sunnyside's unique design, its intimate setting, its bucolic grounds, and its association with a beloved man of letters. After a lunch stop we'll travel to Boscobel - high atop a bluff on the east bank of the Hudson River. Situated on 45-acres, the house was completed in 1808 for the States Dyckman family and is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the country. We'll spend some free time in the Village of Sleepy Hollow before returning to the hotel for a free evening.
On Tuesday, we'll visit Lyndhurst. This historic site of the National Trust is one of the great domestic landmarks of America. A visit to this house and its' 67-acre park is a must for all interested in 19th-century architecture, decorative arts, and landscape design. The home was built in 1842. In 1880, Jay Gould, railroad magnate, Wall Street tycoon, and prototypical robber baron, purchased the estate and renamed it Lyndhurst. After our tour, we'll head home to Baltimore.
