Design, fabricate and launch nylon kites, parachutes and lighter than air craft - with a sewing machine! Boys and girls are introduced to hand and machine sewing, following patterns and create original designs using flight-ready technical fabrics. Sewing is perfect for rapidly prototyping ideas, computational thinking and problem solving. Each participant has their own sewing machine and tool set. Create songs, podcasts, or music videos using tools like Garage Band and other mass media software, explore the basics of song composition, editing tracks, and create a music video. 3D printing and laser cutting is creating the future of things! Using design skills and 3D modeling software, create virtual objects and “print” them in the real world using an array of MakerBot 3D printers. Guided by professional designers, you'll learn TinkerCad and Inkscape fundamentals, create 2 and 3 dimensional concept drawings, investigate abilities and limitations of 3D printers and laser cutters, and explore occupations that use 3D design and rapid prototyping. Students will take home three sets of design files and printed/cut objects. All materials, hardware and software are provided. Some printing completed on-site and laser cutting completed off-site. Learn woodworking under the guidance of experienced shop professionals. Each “apprentice” completes three personal projects: a hardwood cutting board, gift box, and a multipurpose toolbox. This hands-on class develops confidence, independence and applied math skills by following plans, accurately measuring, marking, safely cutting, drilling, and shaping solid wood with quality hand tools, and nontoxic hand-finishing.
