Certain Continuing Education certification s in Health and Human Services career training require one or more prerequisite courses as a foundation for further study.

Some of these areas of career training also require a clinical placement for completion; some have an online learning component. Here are criteria along with the symbol that will indicate where each applies:

Cardiovascular technicians focus on advanced diagnostic techniques such as stress testing and Holter monitoring. Learn about material management, supply, processing and distribution in health care facilities. Explore the duties of a Central Service Technician including the reprocessing, decontaminating, disinfecting, preparation, packaging, sterilization and distribution of medical-surgical instruments, equipment and soft goods products in hospitals and large ambulatory care settings. CPR and First Aid for Infants and Young Children
Obtain the pediatric CPR and first aid instruction necessary for childcare providers in this 8-hour course. Successful students will receive a CPR card from the American Heart Association and a certificate of completion. Written and skills evaluation required. CPR for Health Care Providers
Acquire information about cardiopulmonary resuscitation including signs and symptoms of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, risk factors of heart disease and the skills needed to perform CPR and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Qigong for the Massage Therapist
Learn about body opening movements to relax the body and clear an accumulation of tension. Topics include the Eight Pieces of Brocade to cleanse the body and circulate energy to improve the health of the body/mind, stimulate healing, and increase longevity. The student will also learn how to apply these techniques to a current clinical practice. NURSE REFRESHER online!
CCBC in cooperation with the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) offers an online nurse refresher theory course (NUR7000). This course equals 90 instructional hours and is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.

NUR 7000
This CSM/online course must be completed within 12 weeks of registration. Those who successfully meet course requirements will be awarded a CSM certificate of completion. NOTE: To reactivate your nursing license you must complete a clinical course. The certificate of completion from CSM, as well as other requirements, must be submitted before registration for a clinical course.

NURSING ASSISTANT TRAINING

CONTINUING EDUCATION CERTIFICATE
This Maryland Board of Nursing approved program prepares students to function as a nursing assistant in a variety of health care settings. Upon completion of theory and clinical, you are eligible to take the state GNA certification examination. An achievement award is given upon successful completion of both theory and clinical. Clinical placement provides experience in an area nursing home under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Perfect attendance is mandatory for clinical.

Nursing Assistant Theory
Learn to perform nursing functions with clients of any age and with various levels of physical, sensory, cognitive and emotional ability under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Preparation for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) is included. Topics include the role of a nursing assistant in acute and long-term care, the theory of health and disease across the lifespan, client care skills and medical terminology. Maryland Board of Nursing approved. To receive an award of completion, students must successfully complete both Nursing Assistant Theory and Clinical. Perfect attendance is mandatory for all classes and clinical. Proof of a current negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray reading is required before admission to clinical. Nursing Assistant Clinical
Master the knowledge and skills learned during the theory skills laboratory in a clinical patient care setting under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Preparation for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) is included. Topics include application of health care and disease theory in a clinical setting; providing a safe clinical environment; performance and delivery of patient care skills; individualized patient care and observation, recording and reporting skills. Ophthalmic Medical Assistant (OPMA)
Study to become an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant. Learn basic anatomical structures of the eye and skull, common ophthalmic diseases and their symptoms and treatment. Acquire the skills necessary to operate equipment in the ophthalmic office, assist with eye examinations and provide patient education. This course is based on the program approved by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Professions-Ophthalmic (JCAHP-O). Completion of this course and successful work experience enables students to sit for national certification as an ophthalmic assistant. Oral Radiography
Prepare for Maryland state certification in oral radiography. Learn basic anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of radiography, safety, film processing and mounting and viewing. Learn the role of the Pharmacy Technician in a pharmaceutical setting. This is the first of two courses leading to national certification as a Pharmacy Technician.
